Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 25 -- The Vizhinjam International Seaport has scripted history by handling 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) within the very first year of its operations, marking a major breakthrough for India's maritime sector.

Commercial operations at the country's first deep-water, fully automated transshipment terminal began in December 2024. Since then, as many as 456 vessels have berthed at the port, underscoring its rapid rise as a premier maritime hub.

Blessed with natural draft depths of up to 24 metres, Vizhinjam has been successful in attracting several ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), capable of carrying the world's biggest cargo loads.
