Kolkata, July 14 -- Tension gripped West Bengal's Khejuri area in East Midnapore district on Monday during the 12-hour bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to protest the alleged unnatural deaths of two residents.

The bandh saw road blockades, vandalism, clashes with police, and widespread disruption to daily life.

The protest was sparked by the deaths of Sujit Das (23) of Purba Bhangonmari and Sudhir Chandra Paik (65) of Jhantihari, who died on Friday night while attending a Muharram-related cultural event in Janaka.

According to the police, the two men were electrocuted after a halogen lamp fell from a pole at the event site. Locals supported this version, stating that a lighting fixture collapsed on the victims.
