Lucknow, April 8 -- Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya paid tribute to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the author of the national anthem "Vande Mataram," on his death anniversary at his camp office in Lucknow on Wednesday.

He said that Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's works still inspire patriotism, self-respect, and national consciousness among the countrymen.

The Deputy Chief Minister described him as a great litterateur, novelist, and social reformer, calling him the father of modern Bengali literature.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that "Vande Mataram" became a powerful medium to unite the countrymen during the freedom struggle and still ignites the spirit of patriotism in the hearts of every Indian.
