Mumbai, Jan. 30 -- Police in Uran, Navi Mumbai, arrested five members of a gang for attempting to steal cattle and kidnapping a local resident in the early hours of Friday after villagers mounted a chase that led to the suspects' vehicle being forced off the road.

One accused managed to escape, while the kidnapped man and the calf were rescued safely.

The incident occurred at around 3 am in the Chanaje Mulekhand area when the accused arrived in a red Scorpio vehicle and attempted to capture a calf from stray cattle. Umesh Koli, a 36-year-old auto-rickshaw driver and resident of the village, confronted the group, following which he was allegedly assaulted, tied up, and forcibly taken away in the vehicle along with the calf.
