Kolkata, Jan. 6 -- The union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has rejected the West Bengal government's proposal for preparing a panel for the appointment of the Director General of Police (DGP), citing an inordinate delay and procedural lapses, and has advised the state to seek directions from the Supreme Court.

The decision has put the Mamata Banerjee-led state government under pressure, with acting DGP Rajeev Kumar (IPS: 1989 batch) scheduled to retire on January 31, 2026.

With less than a month left before his tenure ends, the appointment of a regular police chief remains stuck.
