Chandigarh, Dec. 19 -- Proceedings in the Haryana Assembly were repeatedly disrupted on Friday during the second day of the winter session as a debate on Vande Mataram triggered sharp political exchanges, leading to sloganeering, the naming of Congress legislators and physical scuffles between MLAs and marshals.
The controversy began after Zero Hour, when a ruling party MLA proposed a discussion on Vande Mataram and it was accepted by Speaker Harvinder Kalyan.
After lunch, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini initiated the debate, describing the subject as significant for public awareness and youth education.
During his remarks, Saini referred to historical developments, which prompted strong protests from Congress legislators.
