Lucknow, Aug. 6 -- Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai today strongly criticised the BJP, accusing it of attempting to appropriate the legacy of the Quit India Movement while concealing the historical opposition to it by its ideological predecessors.
Addressing a press conference at the UPCC headquarters here, Rai pointed out that leaders such as Veer Savarkar and Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, along with the RSS, had opposed the movement.
Citing historical records, Rai stated that Dr. Mukherjee had written to the Governor of Bengal on July 26, 1942, advising him to suppress the movement.
He also claimed that Savarkar, during the Hindu Mahasabha's 24th session in Kanpur in 1942, openly supported British rule.
