Lucknow, Oct. 6 -- Following reports of children's deaths in some states allegedly linked to the consumption of a cough syrup, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued an alert and banned the sale of the suspected toxic syrup.

Reacting to the controversy, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak clarified that the state government had never purchased such a cough syrup.

Speaking to the media today, Pathak said, "I have issued an advisory to avoid such a cough syrup.
