Hyderabad, June 25 -- Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar released a strongly worded statement in Hyderabad on Wednesday, marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India.

He described the period beginning June 25, 1975, as the "darkest chapter in Indian democracy," accusing the Congress party of "murdering democracy" in its thirst for power.

Reflecting on the 21-month-long Emergency, Bandi Sanjay said, "It was a period when citizens' voices were silenced, civil liberties were crushed, and opposition leaders from RSS, ABVP, and Jana Sangh were jailed under MISA. Press censorship was enforced and even MPs who dared to question the government were stripped of their membership."
