Beirut, Nov. 17 -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under fire from an Israeli army Merkava tank positioned inside Lebanese territory, the peacekeeping mission said.

According to UNIFIL, heavy artillery bursts landed just five meters from blue helmets, forcing the patrol to take cover in the surrounding terrain. Mission representatives quickly contacted the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) through established communication channels, requesting a halt to the firing.

The tank eventually withdrew, allowing the UN patrol to leave safely after about half an hour.
