United Nations, Jan. 30 -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has launched the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements at its headquarters in Paris, kicking off a series of events and activities to be held throughout the year, as the world celebrates the 150th anniversary since its creation by Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev.
The decision two years ago by the UN General Assembly to hold this year-long celebration aims to recognise the importance of the periodic table as "one of the most important and influential achievements in modern science, reflecting the essence not only of chemistry, but also of physics, biology and other basic sciences disciplines".
