United Nations, July 14 -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a political solution in response to US President Donald Trump's announcement of potential high tariffs on Russia if the conflict remains unresolved.
"I would say that what we absolutely need is to have an immediate ceasefire and to have an immediate ceasefire paving the way for a political solution, and the political solution based on the UN Charter, on the international law and on the different resolutions of the bodies of the UN," Guterres said during a briefing on the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2025.
