Moscow, July 31 -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday signed a bill returning powers to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), a database of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) showed.
Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian parliament passed a bill restoring the independence of the NABU and the SAPO.
The measure abolishing the independence of the NABU and the SAPO was signed by Zelenskyy on July 22. Following nationwide protests against the legislation, the Ukrainian president announced on July 24 that he had approved a new legislative initiative designed to strengthen the agencies' independence.
