New Delhi, June 12 -- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as ''devastating'' the scenes emerging from the site near Ahmedabad airport where Air India Boeing with 242 people on board and bound for London, crashed on Thursday afternoon.

According to Air India, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals on board. There were 12 crew members.

''The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating,'' the UK PM said.

He said he was being kept updated as the situation develops, and ''my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time.''
