New York, May 31 -- U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he plans to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 percent, a move aimed at further shielding the domestic industry from foreign competition.

Trump made the announcement during a visit to a U.S. Steel plant in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, where a 14-billion-dollar partnership between U.S. Steel and Japan's Nippon Steel was unveiled.

"We are going to be imposing a 25 percent increase. We are going to bring it from 25 percent to 50 percent, the tariffs on steel into the United States of America," Trump said, as quoted by local media.
