Hanoi, Sept. 29 -- Typhoon Bualoi made landfall in Vietnam late on Sunday, unleashing destructive winds and torrential rain that forced mass evacuations, grounded flights and left swathes of the country without power, as per the country's state media.

The storm struck just north of Vietnam's largest province with winds exceeding 130 kmph, arriving sooner than forecast.

Heavy rains - ahead of the typhoon - had already caused flooding in Vietnam's central steel belt on Saturday.

In Hue, low-lying streets were inundated, rooftops ripped away and at least one person was reported missing after being swept away in floodwaters.
