Tunis, Feb. 10 -- Tunisia has arrested 19 people for alleged links to an extremist religious cell, the Tunisian National Guard said in a statement on Friday.

The statement, posted on the National Guard's Facebook page, said the 19 people, who were wanted by security and judicial agencies, had been sentenced to one to 10 years in prison on charges of being involved in a terrorist group.

The statement did not provide further details.

Tunisia has witnessed increased terrorist activities since 2011, in which dozens of security and military personnel, as well as civilians and foreign tourists, were killed.
