Washington, Sept. 21 -- US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he will nominate longtime legal ally Lindsey Halligan to serve as the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, following the abrupt departure of Erik Siebert from the post.
Siebert resigned Friday amid reports he faced pressure from Trump administration officials to bring criminal charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James in a mortgage fraud probe.
While Siebert informed colleagues of his resignation by email, Trump insisted on social media that he had been fired, saying he withdrew Siebert's nomination after learning he had received "unusually strong" support from Democratic Virginia senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner.
