Aden, Sept. 27 -- A prominent tribal leader was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Yemen's southern port city of Aden on Friday, a security official told Xinhua.
Sheikh Mehdi Aqrabi, a well-known tribal and community figure, came under fire in the Beir Ahmed area while heading to a nearby mosque for Friday prayers, the local security official said on condition of anonymity.
According to the official, Aqrabi was walking alone without bodyguards when the assailants opened fire, leaving him with critical injuries. He was rushed to a hospital in Aden but later succumbed to his wounds.
Security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to track down the attackers. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
