Nashik, Dec. 12 -- Tree-cutting has begun in Tapovan, Nashik, triggering strong protests from environmental groups. Around 300 trees have already been felled to make way for a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

Despite opposition from environmental activists, the work is being carried out as part of the preparations for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which will bring lakhs of sadhus, saints and devotees to the city.

A large-scale 'Sadhugram' is planned in Tapovan for the upcoming Kumbh Mela, and nearly 1,800 trees may need to be removed for the project.

Environmentalists have fiercely opposed the deforestation, criticising authorities for ignoring ecological concerns.
