Thiruvananthapuram, June 10 -- A 52-day trawl ban came into effect in Kerala from June 10 to July 31, aiming to protect marine resources during the monsoon.

Though Kerala had been imposing a 47-day trawl ban from 1994, it extended the trawl ban to 52 days from 2008 onwards.

The trawl ban was imposed to protect the livelihoods of lakhs of traditional fishers in Kerala. The trawling ban is a measure to conserve marine resources and protect fish populations during their breeding season.

Fishing vessels from other States operating along the Kerala shores were asked to leave the region before June 9.
