Kochi, Sept. 12 -- Traditional knowledge of coastal communities, ranging from weather forecasting to boat building, should be integrated with modern science to ensure safety at sea and long-term sustainability of India's marine fisheries, experts stressed at a stakeholder workshop here.

They noted that fishermen's ability to read subtle signs of the sea and sky, honed over generations, could be combined with satellite modelling and remote sensing to provide localised weather alerts and reliable monsoon forecasts, directly benefitting the fishing community.
