Nagpur, Oct. 7 -- Nineteen children have died so far after consuming the allegedly contaminated "ColdRef" cough syrup, health authorities confirmed today.
The children, hailing from Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, were shifted to various hospitals in Nagpur after their condition worsened, officials said.
Officials further stated that the deaths were primarily caused by multiple organ failure.
A report from the union Health Ministry revealed that laboratory analysis of the cough syrup detected dangerously high levels of diethylene glycol (DEG), an industrial solvent that is highly toxic and known to cause acute kidney failure, particularly in children.
