New Delhi, Nov. 11 -- Delhi morning broke under a suffocating haze on Tuesday, the air thick, skyline invisible, as pollution levels crossed into the 'severe' zone for the first time this season, prompting authorities to invoke GRAP-III.

Non-essential construction activities will be halted and primary classes shifted to hybrid mode amid deepening concern over the city's toxic air.

At 4 p.m., the city's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 426, entering the dark red zone and marking the season's highest level after Monday's reading of 391, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
