Tokyo, Aug. 13 -- Tokyo stocks extended gains on Tuesday, following a strong performance on Wall Street.
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, went up 897.69 points, or 2.15 percent, to close at 42,718.17, its highest level in 13 months.
Market sentiment was buoyed after Japan confirmed special exemptions under U.S. tariff policy.
Buying was also driven by solid corporate earnings, with overseas short-term investors snapping up Nikkei index futures, prompting short-covering and accelerating the market's climb.
A weaker yen, trading at around 148 against the dollar, also boosted export-related shares.
