Chennai, Oct. 14 -- Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, including the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the AIADMK, and the BJP, have welcomed the Supreme Court's order for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the fatal stampede in Karur on September 27. The investigation will be monitored by a panel headed by a retired apex court judge.

Following the decision to transfer the case to the CBI, the apex court also kept under suspension both the one-man judicial enquiry commission constituted by the DMK government and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) ordered by a single judge of the Madras High Court on October 3.
