Chennai, Aug. 30 -- The Tamil Nadu government today launched massive plasticclean-up drive across 21 Water bodies, including Bird Sanctuaries and wetlands in theState to safeguard these fragile ecosystems.

Tamil Nadu is home to 14 notified bird sanctuaries, each protecting unique wetlandand forest ecosystems that serve as critical habitats for both migratory and residentbird species.

From the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, one of the oldest in the country locatedabout 90 km from here in neighbouring Kancheepuram district, to the Point CalimereWildlife Sanctuary on the Coromandel Coast, these protected areas shelter flamingos,pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, ibises and hundreds of other species.
