Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), Feb. 22 -- A 48-year-old woman devotee on a padayatra to the famous Arulmigu Mariamman Temple at Samayapuram in Tiruchirapalli district was killed and another woman grievously injured, when an unidentified vehicle hit them at Panchapur here early on Saturday.

Police said a group of devotees from Keelapazhuvanji village in Manapparai taluk were on a padayatra ahead of the 'Poochorithal' festival (offering of flowers) at the Mariamman temple, when the tragedy occurred.

The devotees split into several groups were walking on the Tiruchirapalli-Madurai national highway after an overnight stay.
