Kolkata, Oct. 30 -- A Trinamool Congress councillor in Birbhum was expelled from the party hours after being accused of rape and breach of promise by a woman who claimed he hid his marriage and lived with her for years.
The decision to remove the councillor was announced today at the party office in Rampurhat by West Bengal Deputy Speaker and Rampurhat MLA Ashish Banerjee.
"The top leadership has decided to expel him indefinitely," Banerjee said, adding, "It took 24 hours because our leader Abhishek Banerjee examined every detail before making a decision. He never acts in haste."The accused councillor, who was also the vice-president of the party's local town committee, was named in a police complaint filed by the woman yesterday.
