Chandrapur, Dec. 1 -- A fully grown tigress was killed after being hit by a speeding goods train near Vihirgaon village in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district, forest officials said today.

The incident occurred on early Sunday on the Ballarshah-Virur railway stretch, as the tigress attempted to cross the tracks.

Authorities said no cubs were present with the animal at the time of the accident.

A veterinary team conducted a post-mortem at the Transit Treatment Centre in Chandrapur, confirming death due to severe injuries and hemorrhage from the collision.

Officials and wildlife conservationists expressed concern over repeated wildlife fatalities along railway lines cutting through forest corridors.
