Chandrapur, Oct. 13 -- A tiger, identified as T-40, died after being struck by a train while crossing railway tracks in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district, forest officials confirmed today.

The accident occurred late last night near the Sindewahi-Alewahi railway crossing when the Gondia-Ballarshah passenger train was passing through the area.

Preliminary reports indicate that the train hit T-40, popularly known as "Bittu," who was around 14 years old, in the Sindewahi forest region, roughly two kilometres from the railway station. Bittu was the son of Jai, the legendary tiger of Umred Karandla Wildlife Sanctuary and was widely known for his large size and distinctive markings.
