Palamu, Jan. 8 -- The population of leopards in Jharkhand is showing a steady rise, with significant numbers being reported from various parts of the state. According to preliminary findings of the ongoing Tiger Estimation exercise, more than 150 leopards are currently estimated to be present in the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) alone.
Apart from Palamu, evidence of leopard presence has also emerged from districts including Godda, Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Chatra and the Kolhan region. These findings have come to light during the nationwide Tiger Estimation exercise, under which populations of tigers as well as other carnivores such as leopards and hyenas are being assessed.
