Siliguri, Dec. 8 -- Three people were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge at Sitong in West Bengal's Darjeeling district on Sunday night, official sources said on Monday.

The driver, who sustained serious injuries but survived, was rescued early Monday after residents spotted the mangled car in the gorge. According to sources, no one was aware of the accident on the Himalayan terrain when the victims were returning to Sitong from Kurseong on a cold, dark winter night.

The injured driver has been admitted to a hospital in Siliguri.
