New York, July 26 -- Legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel has opened up about a chapter in his enduring friendship with Elton John, revealing that comments made by the British music icon about Joel's struggles with alcoholism created a serious rift between the two.

In a candid revelation from the upcoming HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes', Joel, 76, recounts the emotional toll of John's candid remarks in a 2011 Rolling Stone interview, in which the British superstar openly suggested that the 'Piano Man' singer was in need of "real rehab". "Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab," Joel, says in the film. "He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me."
