Shillong, Oct. 9 -- Tension gripped Lapangap, a disputed border area between Meghalaya and Assam, today after a 45-year-old Karbi man died following a scuffle between villagers of the two states.

The border skirmishes between the villagers at Lapangap began when Pnar villagers began harvesting their crop under security cover of Meghalaya and Assam police.

"However, multiple scuffles ensued between residents of Lapangap in Meghalaya under West Jaintia Hills district and Tahpat in Assam's Karbi Anglong district, left one villager dead on the Assam side," Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, the district police chief of West Jaintia Hills, said.
