Kolkata, Sept. 23 -- At least ten people died as heavy overnight rains inundated almost entire Kolkata, throwing life haywire amidst disruption in rail, road and flight movement today, prompting the West Bengal government to pre-pone Durga puja holidays in government schools and advise people to stay indoors.
The deaths were caused by electric shocks as people came in contact with electric poles or snapped wires, sources said.
The massive rains, possibly an effect of cloudburst, pounded the city for five hours at a stretch since Monday-Tuesday midnight and continued intermittently till the afternoon, leading to widespread flooding and affecting transport movement in almost all roads as also those in neighbouring districts.
