New Delhi, April 17 -- The crucial ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect from 5 PM EST April 16 (3.20 AM IST April 17) for 10 days to enable ''good-faith negotiations'' for establishing permanent peace and security between the two countries. This initial period of 10 days may be extended by mutual understanding if progress is demonstrated in the negotiations, according to the terms of the Ceasefire Agreement, brokered by the US.
The Agreement stated that both countries will work to create conditions conducive to lasting peace between them, full recognition of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border.
