Hyderabad, July 1 -- The death toll in the massive explosion at a 3-storey chemical plant in Sangareddy in the outskirts of the city climbed to 38 on Tuesday and 43 workers are still missing.

Of the 38 deaths, many bodies were burnt beyond recognition and only nine bodies have been identified so far, according to officials here.

A few of them are still undergoing treatment at the government hospital in Patancheru.

"More people could be trapped under the debris. Once the rubble is cleared, we will have a clear picture," said a fire official.

The early morning blast at the Sigachi Industries facility in the Pashamylaram industrial area reduced the multi-storey building to rubble.
