Hyderabad, Jan. 4 -- The 217th birth anniversary of Louis Braille was observed across Telangana on Sunday, paying tribute to the visionary who transformed the lives of the visually challenged through the Braille script.
Born in France in 1809, Louis Braille lost his eyesight in early childhood and went on to develop a reading and writing system that enabled blind persons to pursue education and excel in diverse fields such as music, literature and science.
In recognition of his contribution, the state observes Louis Braille's birth anniversary every year at the state and district levels.
According to the 2011 Census, Telangana has 10.46 lakh persons with disabilities, including nearly 1.95 lakh visually impaired individuals.
