Hyderabad, May 5 -- In a major relief to farmers, the Telangana Cabinet Sub-Committee has decided that the state government will procure sorghum (jowar) in addition to maize, Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao announced on Tuesday.
The Minister said the decision, taken with farmers' welfare as the priority, would ensure remunerative prices and financial security, especially as jowar growers are facing difficulties due to low market rates.
He criticised the Centre for not including maize and jowar under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) despite repeated requests from the state, forcing Telangana to step in and undertake procurement on its own.
