Hyderabad, Dec. 11 -- The first phase of the three-phase Gram Panchayat elections began across Telangana at 7am on Thursday.
Polling will continue till 1pm, after which counting will commence at 2 pm. The results are expected to be announced later in the evening.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), over 56.19 lakh voters, including more than 28.78 lakh women, are eligible to cast their ballots in this phase. A total of 12,960 candidates are contesting for 3,834 sarpanch posts, while 65,455 candidates are in the fray for 27,628 ward member positions. On average, 3.38 candidates are contesting for each sarpanch post and 2.36 candidates for each ward member post.
