Shillong, Sept. 19 -- Retaliating to the unilateral restriction imposed by All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) on vehicles entering from Assam and other states to Meghalaya from September 16, the Motor Parivan Sewakarmi Sanmilita Mancha (MPSSM), Assam on Thursday, staged protest at Jorabat on the interstate boundary, disallowing vehicles with Meghalaya registration from entering Assam, causing widespread distress among passengers.
Tourists and commuters were left stranded or forced to turn back as tensions mounted.
Former Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, who was proceeding to Garo Hills via Assam was stopped by the agitating taxi operators from Assam at Jorabat area, and asked to return to Meghalaya.
