Kolkata, Jan. 7 -- Five-time World title winner Vishwanathan Anand opened his campaign by patiently outplaying three time US champion Grand Master Wesley S in the opening round of the Tata Steel Chess India here on Wednesday.

Anand gradually increased the pressure until the US-Filipino GM's position collapsed in the Open category encounter.

In another tie, Indian GM Vidit Gujrathi made a strong statement with the black pieces, dominating compatriot Grand Master Arjun Erigaisi and sealing the win with a rare knight and bishop checkmate.

Twenty-two-year-old US GM Hans Niemann also won his first game with an adventurous king walk against former World Rapid Chess champion and Russian GM Volodar Murzin.
