Dhaka, Jan. 10 -- Tarique Rahman has been made the chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The Standing Committee of the BNP approved the appointment at a meeting held at the party's Gulshan office on Friday night (9.30 pm).

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed the matter to the media after the meeting.

The post of BNP chairman had fallen vacant following the death of party chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia on December 30.

In line with the party constitution, a meeting of the National Standing Committee was convened to address the vacancy.

Tarique was appointed acting chairman of the party in 2018 after Khaleda Zia was jailed.
