Damascus, Sept. 22 -- President of the interim Syrian government Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in New York on Sunday night to attend the 80th UN General Assembly session. The moment is a historically significant one as it shows the gradual erosion of Syria's political isolation on the world stage, with Sharaa being the first leader from Damascus to attend the UNGA since 1967.

However, his attendance as a recognised leader is also a contentious one, given his past terrorist affiliations, as the Syrian President was also a former known Jihadist and a commander of the Al-Qaeda, with the US having issued $10 million bounty on his head.
