Kolkata, May 8 -- The gutsy Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in two consecutive Assembly polls five years apart, is set to take over as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal after his unanimous election as the BJP legislature party leader on Friday.
Adhikari, who served as the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, was elected leader at a meeting of the BJP legislature party in the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town on the north eastern fringes of the city, union Home Minister Amit Shah announced.
Announcing Adhikari's election, Shah said, "His name was proposed by eight legislators. The legislators were also given an option to give a second name, but they only preferred him".
