Shimla, Jan. 7 -- The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Himachal Pradesh government has landed itself in a serious constitutional and political crisis over the controversial extension of the tenure of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation.

What was projected by the government as a routine administrative decision has now snowballed into a legal, constitutional, and political embarrassment.

At the heart of the controversy lies the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, which sought to extend the tenure of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from the prescribed period. The ordinance, however, had a life of only six months.
