Kolkata, Sept. 18 -- The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) today called a 12-hour shutdown in Panskura town, East Medinipur, to protest the alleged rape of a part-time woman ward maintenance worker at the West Bengal government-owned Panskura Super Speciality Hospital.

Though the accused, Zaheer Abbas Khan, the facility manager appointed by an outsourcing agency, was arrested on Tuesday on rape charges, discontent among the hospital workers continued, with employees staging agitations as fresh allegations poured in against the accused, who reportedly enjoyed many privileges in the hospital.

Police registered an FIR after the victim lodged a complaint.
