Gorakhpur, Feb. 17 -- A speeding police vehicle crashed into a tree early Tuesday morning in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district, killing a sub-inspector and injuring seven other personnel.

The accident occurred around 6:30 am in the Katarari area under the Shyamdeurwa Police Station limits.

The police team from Ramgarhtal Police Station was returning after conducting a raid in a fraud case in the Khadda area of Kushinagar.

According to initial investigations, the driver of the Scorpio allegedly dozed off while driving on the highway. The vehicle first climbed onto the divider and then rammed into a tree. The severity of the crash caused extensive damage to the front portion of the SUV.
