New Delhi, Jan. 1 -- Indian stock market on Thursday started the New Year 2026 on a positive note amid buying across the sectors barring FMCG, pharma.

At close, the Sensex was down 32 points or 0.04% at 85,188.60, and the Nifty was up 16.95 points or 0.06% at 26,146.55. The BSE midcap index rose 0.3%, while smallcap index ended flat.

Among the sector, Nifty FMCG ended as the top loser crashing 3.17%, while the other key losers were Nifty Pharma down by 0.40% and Healthcare down by 0.19%.

On the other hand, Nifty Auto (1.03%), Realty (0.84%), Metal (0.79%), and IT (0.76%) ended with healthy gains while Nifty Bank alos rose 0.22%, and the Financial Services index climbed by 0.19%.
